Statement in Solidarity with Haitian Immigrants and Refugees
Ohio state and city leaders have been quick to denounce and repute the baseless claims that were recently leveraged against Springfield, Ohio’s community of Haitian immigrants. As has Cross Over Community Development (COCD), who strongly denounces the false allegations and condemns the resulting hate rhetoric and threats that have spawned in its wake.
As the impact continues to grow on immigrant communities in Springfield, in Dayton, and around the country, Dayton’s own Mayor Jeffrey Mimms Jr., issued the following statement:
“I would like to address and firmly debunk a recent social media story alleging Dayton’s immigrant and refugee community is involved in eating cats. This claim is totally false and dangerously irresponsible of politicians aiming to sow division and fear. There has been absolutely zero reports of this type of activity and spreading such misinformation undermines our status as a welcoming city. The city of Dayton stands by its immigrant and refugee community and we value all of their contributions to our city’s vibrant culture and economy. We will remain committed to creating an inclusive environment for all Dayton residents.”
COCD likewise stands in solidarity with the immigrant community of Dayton and its neighbors, particularly the Haitian community of Springfield, and offers its services in support. Haitian immigrants who are interested in learning more about the resources that COCD can provide, including ESL and other support services, can contact info@crossovercd.org. Our staff and volunteers are here to assist and offer support to our immigrant friends and neighbors.
