Summer Youth Program (June 2nd to August 5th, 2017)

The Montgomery County Workforce Development allocated funding through YouthWorks to provide summer employment experiences and training opportunities to the youth of ages between 16 and 18 residing in Montgomery County. Cross Over Community Development partnered with YouthWorks to be able to provide paid employment to African refugee youth.

The program assisted youth in developing fundamental life skills that would help them with personal growth, interpersonal relationships, and career development. Refugee youth, ages 16-17, were employed by our organization in order to encourage constructive, character building life skills and giving them the opportunity to make positive contributions to the community. East End Community Services generously offered a six week space for Cross Over tutoring. The youth were assessed using the tools provided by Ms. Osir Okumu Kinywa, ESL teacher at DPS. Leveled tutoring was provided daily in the areas of English reading and comprehension, and basic math skills. This opportunity was afforded to us thanks to Ms. Lynn Luckoski, who provided the tutoring. RTA facilitated the transportation of one tutor by providing bus tickets.

With the support of Full Circle Cleaners LLC, the youth received training in home and office cleaning. Miami Valley Alliance at City Church and New Hope Church provided space for various cleaning training. Church on the Rock provided training in cleaning and cooking as well as backpacks with school supplies for all the participants. The majority of the youth at our site enjoyed riding their bicycles when coming for tutoring every morning, thanks to Bicycles for All that offered bicycles in addition to offering bike repair training.

The summer program worked resulted in tutoring for 10 youth. After the program ended, we were able to enroll 2 students at Mound Street Academies.

Finally, a special thanks to Mr. Ron Wended for his insights, encouragements and unwavering support to our organization. He facilitated connections between Cross Over Community Development and many other organizations. We are also thankful for the numerous volunteers and trainers. Without their support, these opportunities would not be possible.
